Don't expect The Donnas to turn on a lip gloss show when they head down under this May. These girls are definitely no Britney clones, no mass marketed girl group, and their live shows rock with serious attitude. NME described them as "fun-punk minimalists who've cut to the quick of rock and, in their haiku-like way, say more about, y'know, stuff, than the ponderous mewlings of serious bands ever do," while Pollstar noted; "They cuss. They drink. They write their own songs. They rock."
Currently the darlings of MTV, The Donnas have rocked an ever increasing fan base with their catchy tongue in cheek new album Spend The Night. The album, critically acknowledged as marking their rock maturation, follows the 2001 release of The Donnas Turn 21, Get Skintight in 1999 and American Teenage Rock 'n' Roll Machine in 1998.
Their live shows are noted for their energy and quality, Rollingstone Magazine writing "Donna R's quicksilver guitar solos carried the night, yowling metallically along to bassist Donna F's and drummer Donna C's frenetic beat-on-the-brat rhythms."
The Australian tour will see the band celebrate their ten year anniversary – a milestone for the group who have over the years openly expressed their distaste at being stereotyped. Their determination has won through with media such as Popmatters acknowledging that The Donnas are not just a girl band but rather a band.
Confirmed to tour Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane and Melbourne in May, The Donnas will be joined by Australia's The Casanovas and the UK's Hoggboy.
The CASANOVAS have toured with the likes of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Vines and The Datsuns. Their live shows, like The Donnas, are described as intense and vibrant with a recent appearance at The Falls Festival and a UK tour cementing their status as a new force in Australian music.
HOGGBOY round out the lineup and in the words of NME "Hoggboy stand for all that is dirty, angry, dumb and cool about rock 'n' roll." Heralded as the next big thing in UK music Hoggboy will be the perfect accompaniment to an evening of arse kicking rock.
