AUSTRALIAN TOUR ANNOUNCED
"We have very primal ideas about everything," says Sebastien Grainger, one half of rock duo, Death From Above 1979. "Our music is an expression of those primal ideas... we want our songs to make people completely lose it."
And come next month, lose it you will, when The Frontier Touring Company bring the Canadian rockers down under for what is sure to be a jaw-dropping, heart-racing, pulsating tour of Australia.
The duo, consisting of Grainger (vocals/drums) and Jesse F. Keeler (bass/synth), take an unconventional approach to rock, blending drum and dance beats with bass riffs, refusing to employ a lead guitarist. But such an approach has not dampened their success. Instead, with the recent release of their debut album, You're a Woman, I'm a Machine (2004, Shiny Records), the twosome are making waves in music circles worldwide.
Pitchfork describes the album as a "high-gloss, feel-better noise-rock" with "attitude".
PopMatters describes it as an album that "rocks very, very hard... Libidinous and testosterone-fuelled one minute, sensitive and observant the next... You're a Woman, I'm a Machine shows that not only do these guys bring the goods live, but they have also proven that this sound is no gimmick. They’re for real."
Highly familiar with the live music scene, having toured Canada, the UK and the US extensively over the past few months, Death From Above 1979's live shows are events not to be missed. The duo play rock music as it should be played – loud, frantic, heavy and hard.
Supporting Death From Above 1979 will be Wolf & Cub and The Grates. No strangers to the live music scene, Adelaide locals Wolf & Cub have toured extensively since leaping onto the public's radar in late 2003, playing with the likes of Cut Copy, Ground Components and The Von Bondies. They are certain to impress with their feel-good, beat-heavy rock.
In the space of just over a year, Brisbane up-and-comers The Grates have catapulted to fame: securing airplay on Triple J and community radio networks nation-wide; signing to record label Dew Process; and having their hit song Trampoline plastered all over television as the anthem to a catchy Just Jeans ad. Trampoline has also been nominated for Triple J's 2004 Hottest 100, and the trio has a new EP due for release on February 14. Along with Wolf & Cub, The Grates are sure to keep the crowds entertained (and grooving) before the headline act.
